Glassine This is what I use to place over my drawings to protect them while I draw, resting my hand on the glassine.
Clairefontaine Pastelmat Card Pads This is a truly unique surface and superb to work on with pastels!
Sennelier La Carte Pastel Card Pad – Caution with this type, unlike the Clairefontaine you can NOT get this wet at all!!

Sharpeners

These are products I own and use.

X-ACTO School Pro Classroom Electric Pencil Sharpener – This gets me sharp points without breakage!
Derwent Super Point Mini– An incredible sharpener and my favorite!
Exacto Knife used for sharpening my pastel pencils if they don’t sharpen well in the sharpener.
Sandpaper Paddle for getting a sharp point on my pastel pencil without using a sharpener.

Other / Misc.

These are products I own and use.

Aluminum Pencil Extenders. Very handy when your pencils begin to get too short to hold.
Various small brushes for blending.
Various sponges for blending.
Colour Shaper – I have the Taper Point, but hope to get more.
Color Wheel – Useful for finding the right combination of colors.
Arteza Water Brushes (Premium Series) – These are incredible and work wonderfully!

An aluminum straight edge. I have two ( 18 inch and 24 inch ) which are used for measuring the drawing paper and creating a light grid.
Drawing boards. I use the Richeson Drawing Clip Board, White Artist’s Sketch Board and Blick Sketch Pad Boards. This allows me the freedom to sketch and draw any where.
Blick White Artist Tape – PH Neutral tape to tape the paper down to the drawing boards. It helps to keep the edges clean and the papers flat.
Krylon UV Archival Gallery Series Varnish (Matte) A few light layers to protect the finished work.

No matter what you are drawing or painting you need to have contrast to make your images pop. Don’t be afraid to go dark.
